Goa produced a spirited performance against a strong Oman side but fell 25 runs short in the opening match of the three-match one-day series at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Oman. Chasing a challenging target of 310, Goa fought hard throughout the innings before being bowled out for 284 in 49.5 overs.
Despite the defeat, Goa’s performance against an Oman side packed with international experience was highly encouraging. The Goan batters showed considerable resilience during the chase, while the bowlers also put up a disciplined effort to keep Oman from posting an even bigger total.
Goa’s chase, however, got off to a difficult start. Opener Abhinav Tejrana was dismissed in the fourth over with only nine runs on the board. The early setback put pressure on the Goan batting line-up, and all-rounder Darshan Misal departed as the fourth wicket, with Goa yet to complete 100 runs.
At that stage, the match appeared to be slipping away from Goa, but Suyash Prabhudessai and Deepraj Gaonkar produced an excellent recovery. The pair stitched together a crucial 105-run partnership for the fifth wicket and brought Goa firmly back into contention.
Prabhudessai led the fightback with a fluent 72 off 69 balls, striking six fours and three sixes. Gaonkar provided equally valuable support, scoring a determined 68 with six boundaries. Their partnership not only stabilised the innings but also gave Goa genuine hope of chasing down the target.
The lower order continued the fight. Vikas Singh contributed 26, while Shivendra Bhujbal scored 19 as Goa refused to surrender. Chigurupati Venkat added 11, and Vasuki Koushik remained unbeaten on nine, but Goa eventually ran out of partners and was bowled out for 284 with just one ball remaining.
Earlier, Oman posted a formidable 309 for eight in their allotted 50 overs, with opener Jatinder Singh producing the innings-defining performance.
Jatinder smashed a superb 127 off 99 deliveries, hitting 11 fours and seven sixes. He gave Oman an excellent start by sharing a 120-run opening partnership with Hassnain Ul Wahab, who scored a valuable 54.
Oman maintained their momentum through the middle overs. Hammad Mirza contributed 36, while Jiten Ramanandi scored 40. The duo added 63 runs for the fourth wicket to strengthen Oman’s position.
Goa’s bowlers, however, kept fighting and prevented Oman from running away with the game. Vasuki Koushik was particularly impressive, finishing with two wickets for just 34 runs from his 10 overs, including two maidens. Chigurupati Venkata and Deepraj Gaonkar also claimed two wickets apiece according to the scorecard, while their disciplined efforts helped restrict Oman to 309 rather than a substantially higher total.
Although Goa ultimately fell short, the team’s determined response to a difficult target and its ability to recover from early setbacks will provide plenty of encouragement ahead of the remaining matches in the series. The 105-run partnership between Prabhudessai and Gaonkar, in particular, underlined Goa’s batting depth and fighting spirit against a quality international side.
